Let's Get Defiant: The Game

Have you heard about Defiance yet? It is a television series being shown on SyFy (I hate that name and pronounce it sifee) and a game produced by Trion Worlds. I'll talk about the show later. For now, let's discuss the game.

tl;dr - It is a fun game with a sci-fi setting that doesn't require a lot of thought to enjoy.

The reviews are all over the place on this one. People love it, people hate it, people think it is just right. Something I have learned over the years is you can't always trust the opinions of others to match with your own. With the reviews out like they are it's too hard to say if this game is a hit or a miss for you. For me this game is a hit.

If you have never played a MMO before this is a decent introduction. You only have to pay one time to play, no monthly fees. You will play through an ongoing story line that ties into the television show that will have you playing solo at times and grouping with other players at times. You can play either style (solo vs group) and enjoy the game. Just like candy bars, sometimes you feel like a group and sometimes you don't.

More after the jump below the video.

Crafting isn't an issue in Defiance. This will be a turn off for some players. Sorry.
First person view isn't available in Defiance. This will be a turn off for some players. Sorry.
You get to run over bad guys with your vehicle, blow up stuff, kill big ugly bugs and bring down destruction on everything thing that gets in your way. This will be a turn on for some players. Me!

You chose between an alien or human character, watch an opening sequence and then begin blazing a path of destruction through the remains of San Francisco. The mutants don't like you, the raiders don't like you and the bugs especially don't like you. Kill 'em all! You are an Ark Hunter. As alien technology falls from the sky (back story to be fleshed out later) you rush to these Ark Falls to salvage what you can from them. This is where you will encounter other players the most often. You won't be in competition with them as you have common enemies (mutants, bugs, etc..) to fight against at the Ark Fall. This is also where the best loot is supposed to come from.

Speaking of loot, no ninja looting! The loot you see drop is yours. Grab it and go. If you don't want it just leave it. When you reach story line locations you'll have the option to buy more gear and parts along with selling the things you have looted and no longer want.

Gearing up can be a bit confusing. You can improve your weapons by adding MODs to them. The weapon needs to have an available MOD slot and you need to have a MOD that will fit there. You don't put sniper rifle scopes on pistols and you don't put rocket launcher guidance systems on sniper rifles. You may find a weapon early in game that will last you a long time because it was a good piece of loot compared to what you find next.

There are also specialty weapons in game that have limited use. The Big Reaper is a personal favorite. It is a GIANT machine gun with over 4,000 rounds of ammo. When you run out of ammo the gun goes away. Usually these weapons spawn during a mission where they will be a benefit to you.

If you are looking for a third person shoot 'em up that doesn't require a lot of thought to play then you should enjoy Defiance. I know I am.

The game is available for PC, Xbox and PS.
